Speech structure

Father of the bride speech

The purpose is to praise your daughter with some well chosen anecdotes. Some childhood references that illustrate her character and habits. Some references to her as an adult that demonstrate her life skills. Congratulate her on choosing such a good partner. Give the groom a little advice on how to deal with her rare foibles. Lots of humour. In good taste.

Eulogy

Describe your relationship to the deceased, any activities you did together, notable achievements and range of interests, how viewed and valued by family, friends, colleagues. What will be missed. Some humour is in order. Check facts with the family. This should be an informative speech.

Tone
  • Reflective, uplifting, consoling

Anniversaries/ milestones

Birthday, golden wedding, retirement speech etc

String of anecdotes marking activities, achievements, ‘disasters’, the fun.  Keep the stories short. Don’t get carried away.

Introducing the speaker
