Speech guidelines
There is no set formula for constructing or giving a great speech. Whatever the content, be it informative, entertaining, consoling, inspiring, it needs to come from you and you need to say it in your own unique way.
However as a start we favour the following set of guidelines:
- A short introduction that grabs attention with a quotation, a paradox or a joke, well delivered
- A clear structure with a logical flow of ideas and clear signposting
- Rule of three: sections per speech, arguments per section etc
- Short phrases and words that are easy to read
- Humour, if it is natural to you, to lighten the tone, help the audience relax, and add variety
- A punchy conclusion that links back to the start
It needs to have a style that reflects your way of speaking, and a tone that fits the occasion.
As to length, the general rule is that the speech should be long enough to cover the subject, short enough to retain attention.
